Rain to England's rescue as Irish depart

ENGLAND advanced to the Super Eights stage of the World Twenty20 on Tuesday after rain caused its decisive Group D match against Ireland to be called off at the Guyana National Stadium.

Ireland had done well to limit England to 120-8 off 20 overs with former Irish batsman Eoin Morgan top scoring with 45 off 37 balls for his adopted team.

But Ireland's run chase was twice curtailed by showers and the match ended as a 'no result' with the Irish stalled at 14-1 off 3.3 overs.

England and Ireland both ended Group B on one point but the English progressed on superior net run rate. The West Indies won the group following victories over both England and Ireland.

The final abandonment would have disappointed the Irish, who bowled and fielded superbly in search of a victory to push them into the next phase.

Ireland's medium pacer Kevin O'Brien (2-22) and tall fast bowler Boyd Rankin (2-25) sparkled for their country. Veteran Trent Johnston conceded just 14 runs from his four overs and claimed the prize wicket of England captain Paul Collingwood.

After being sent in, England's openers Michael Lumb (14) and Craig Kiewswetter (13) shared an enterprising opening stand of 24 off 24 balls. But once Kieswetter was run out, the middle order couldn't cope with a sluggish pitch and a fired-up Ireland attack.

England slumped to 49-4 in the 10th over as O'Brien removed Lumb and the dangerous Kevin Pietersen.

Ireland started cautiously before the first rain interruption at 4-0 off 1.2 overs. They restarted in pursuit of the same target of 121 but showers returned to have the final say.
