T20 India-Pakistan match venue shifted to Kolkata
THE International Cricket Council says Kolkata has replaced Dharamsala as the venue for the high-profile World Twenty20 game between India and Pakistan on March 19.
ICC chief executive David Richardson made the announcement at a news conference in New Delhi yesterday following security worries voiced by the Pakistan Cricket Board.
The PCB raised its concern after Virbhadra Singh, the chief minister of the provincial government of Himachal Pradesh, said he would not be able to provide adequate security for the match in the hill city.
The PCB sent a team to assess the security arrangements in Dharamsala on Monday, then asked the ICC for a change.
“The bottom line is... security is paramount and it’s a difficult decision, not one that we wanted to make because we wanted to stick with the original plan but one we’ve been forced into,” Richardson said.
The Pakistan team had delayed its departure to India, which is hosting the World T20, as it awaited security clearance from its country’s government.
Meanwhile, in a Group A first-round match in Dharamsala yesterday Bangladesh defeated the Netherlands by eight runs.
Coming off a fine run to the Asia Cup final last weekend, where it lost to India, Bangladesh was favorite to qualify for the Super 10 stage from a Group A which also includes Oman and Ireland.
Left-handed opening batsman Tamim Iqbal hit a brisk unbeaten 83 from 58 balls, including six fours and three sixes, in Bangladesh’s total of 153-7. The Netherlands was restricted to 145-7, with Al-Amin Hossain and the experienced Shakib Al Hasan sharing two wickets each.
Netherlands captain Peter Borren and Stephan Myburgh were joint top-scorers with 29 runs each, but Bangladesh struck at regular intervals to keep the pressure on.
