Tendulkar, Vijay slam tons

SACHIN Tendulkar plundered an unbeaten 191 and shared a 308-run third-wicket stand with Murali Vijay yesterday before Australia hit back with three late wickets to contain India to 435 for five at stumps on day three of the second test.

India resumed on 128 for two yesterday and didn't lose a wicket until the third session as it chased Australia's first-innings total of 478 in Bangalore.

Tendulkar posted his 49th test hundred and Vijay scored 139 for his maiden century as the pair relentlessly ground down the listless Australian attack on a slow and low wicket.

Skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni was unbeaten on 11.

Mitchell Johnson revitalized Australia's attack with a two-wicket burst with the second new ball in the post-tea session to end an 81-over stretch of virtually unchallenged Indian dominance. The left-arm paceman accounted for Vijay, caught behind by Time Paine after facing 310 balls, and Cheteswara Poojara, adjudged LBW for four in his first test innings.

Suresh Raina scored 32 in a 61-run fifth-wicket partnership with Tendulkar before uppishly driving part-time leftarm spinner Michael Clarke to Ben Hilfenhaus at mid-on.

"It's been a tough day. Big partnership of 300," Johnson, easily the pick of the Australian bowlers with 3-89 from 23 overs, said. "As a fast bowler, you want to see some bounce and carry; it was a bit too slow. We stuck through the day and got a few wickets in the end to put some pressure on them. "

Offspinner Nathan Hauritz conceded 153 runs from 39 overs, while Clarke returned 1-27 from eight as Australian captain Ricky Ponting rotated seven bowlers in search of a breakthrough.

Vijay thanked Tendulkar for helping reach a test century.

"It was a dream come true for me to play with Sachin," he said. "I was just focused on each ball and not try to think too far ahead. In that regard Sachin helped me a lot."

Tendulkar's 49 test hundreds is 10 more than anyone else ever in test cricket, but he's only converted five so far into double centuries. He has form against Australia, though, scoring an unbeaten 241 in Sydney in 2004 which was only seven runs short of his highest test innings.

The Australians missed a key opportunity to remove Vijay on 49, with the total at 143. Pushing a Hilfenhaus ball to short cover, Vijay darted out for a single but was turned back by Tendulkar.

Hauritz went for a direct hit and missed the .

Vijay, who was reprimanded by ICC match referee Chris Broad for displaying too many advertising logos on his batting pads, made the most of his reprieve to post his first test century in just his eighth match.

Tendulkar began the day with a tucked boundary to fine leg off Hauritz and followed it with a vertical sweep of the off-spinner. As the day wore on, the 37-year-old batsman played some crisp drives, cuts and sweep shots, raising his sixth hundred of 2010 with a six over long-on off Hauritz.
