Tendulkar named cricketer of the year

INDIA batsman Sachin Tendulkar was named 2010 Cricketer of the Year in Bangalore, India, yesterday.

"It's fantastic to win this award, I'm really excited... and this last season for the entire team has been really special," said the 37-year-old. Tendulkar fought off stiff competition to take the award ahead of fellow shortlist nominees Virender Sehwag, also of India, South Africa's Hashim Amla and England's Graeme Swann. Sehwag won the International Cricket Council's player of the year award. His teammates Tendulkar and captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni also made the ICC's test team of the year, which featured three South Africans, two Englishmen and two Australians. England fast bowler Steven Finn won the emerging player award and South Africa batsman AB de Villiers was the one-day player of the year.
