Ton-up Dravid carries bat but England enforces follow-on
RAHUL Dravid carried his bat yesterday to drag India to its highest total of the series against England and then came out to bat again on day four of the final test after the home side enforced the follow-on.
Already leading the four-test series 3-0, England took the final four wickets after lunch at The Oval in London for the addition of 82 runs to wrap up the Indian innings for 300 all out - with Dravid unbeaten on 146.
India finished 92 runs short of the follow-on target despite Dravid's third century of the series but should at least now avoid a second innings defeat of the series.
England dismissed Amit Mishra, Gautam Gambhir, RP Singh and Sreesanth after lunch, with Tim Bresnan taking the last two wickets in three balls to finish with 3-54.
England's total of 591-6 declared remains out of reach for India but Mishra's 43 and Singh's swashbuckling 25 at least trimmed the deficit.
Although their team's newfound resilience has come too late to make a real impact upon the series, Indian fans in the stands finally had something to cheer with Dravid's knock.
India's miserable performance on the rain-affected third day hinted at an early capitulation yesterday, but Dravid remained cool and picked his strokes with composure - becoming the first player ever to face 30,000 deliveries in test cricket.
The 38-year-old Dravid's 35th test ton took him above Sunil Gavaskar and Brian Lara in the all-time list of century makers.
