Triple-ton Gayle force hits Sri Lanka in Galle

CHRIS Gayle was out for a career-best 333 on the second day of the first test against Sri Lanka in Galle yesterday, one of spinner Ajantha Mendis' six wickets before West Indies declared on 580-9 after tea.

Sri Lanka lost Tillakaratne Dilshan for a duck but recovered to reach 54-1 at the close. Captain Kumar Sangakkara struck seven boundaries for an unbeaten 33, while Tharanga Paranavitana was on 10.

Gayle hit 34 boundaries and nine sixes in 437 balls before being bowled by Mendis, who finished with 6-169 from 59 overs.

Gayle fell short of Brian Lara's world record of 400 but joined the former West Indian batsman, Donald Bradman of Australia and Virender Sehwag of India as the only players to score two triple-hundreds.

He moved past Lara's score of 221, the highest by a West Indian against Sri Lanka, and also past the highest ground score of 237 by Sri Lankan Mahela Jayawardene against South Africa in 2004.

Before his dismissal Shivnarine Chanderpaul (32) became only the second West Indian after Lara to pass 9,000 runs in test cricket, completing the feat in his 127th match.

In Hyderabad, Brendon McCullum stroked his first double century to dash India's hopes of forcing a victory against New Zealand on the final day of the second test yesterday.

India made 68-0 at close after the visitors declared their second innings at 448-8 at tea, setting the hosts an improbable target of 327 runs to win in the last session of the day.

McCullum (225) frustrated the Indian spinners with his quick footwork and deft reverse sweeps.

The three-match series is tied at 0-0. The final test will be played in Nagpur on November 20-24.

In Dubai, United Arab Emirates, Younis Khan notched his 17th test hundred to guide Pakistan to a draw against South Africa on the final day of the first test yesterday.

Set 451 for victory after the visitors declared their second innings on 318-2, Younis stroked an unbeaten 131 as Pakistan lost just one wicket on the fifth day to reach 343-3.

Younis got solid support from skipper Misbah-ul-Haq (76) as the pair put on an unbroken fourth-wicket stand of 186.
