Watson propels Australia past S. Africa
SHANE Watson continued his imperious form at the World Twenty20 by smashing 70 runs after taking two wickets to propel Australia to a crushing eight-wicket win over South Africa in their Super Eights match yesterday in Colombo, Sri Lanka.
Watson hit two sixes and eight boundaries from 47 balls as Australia moved into a strong position to make the semifinals.
"It's nice to be able to continue to play well. I know how important my role is. There's still a hell of a long way to go," Watson said.
"Facing Dale Steyn and Morne Morkel was always going to be a big challenge. I knew we have to get through it without getting out."
South Africa made a modest 146-5 in its 20 overs after being sent in to bat by Australia captain George Bailey. Australia chased down the target with 14 deliveries to spare.
Australia stumbled early in its chase losing in-form opener David Warner, who was bowled by fast bowler Morne Morkel for 5 with the total on 10.
But Mike Hussey joined Watson and the pair added 99 off 64 balls for the second wicket to give Australia control.
Earlier, left-arm Australia spinner Xavier Doherty returned a career-best 3-20 to restrict South Africa to a modest score. Watson was also impressive with the ball, taking 2-29.
Robin Pietersen top-scored for South Africa with an unbeaten 32.
