Windies, Aussies play out a thrilling tie
THE West Indies and Australia played out a thrilling last-over tie on Tuesday in the third one-day international in Kingston.
The hosts, chasing 221 to win, were bowled out for 220 off the fourth ball of the final over when captain Darren Sammy was run out after a mix-up with last man Kemar Roach. "I won't lay blame on anybody," Sammy said. "I think that we played a fantastic game. I'm just disappointed that, as a team, we didn't manage to push through in that final over."
It was only the 27th tie in an ODI, the most recent previously involving India and Sri Lanka last month. Australia and West Indies played the first ODI ever, at the MCG in 1984. The West Indies have tied six ODIs and the Australians have been involved in nine ties, including the dramatic last-over tie against South Africa at Edgbatson which allowed them to advance to the 1999 World Cup final.
Opener Johnson Charles led the West Indies' chase with a top score of 45, while all-rounders Andre Russell (37), Kieron Pollard (36) and wicket-keeper Carlton Baugh (33) revived the chase after the middle order faltered.
Australia captain Shane Watson took 3-30 with his seamers.
