Windies fall to Afghans
SPIRITED Afghanistan upset former champion West Indies at the World Twenty20 with a thrilling six-run victory in their last Group 1 match yesterday.
Afghanistan’s four-pronged spin attack led by 17-year-old Rashid Khan and Mohammad Nabi, who returned identical figures of 2-26, restricted the West Indies to 117-8 on a turning wicket in Nagpur after Najibullah Zadran’s 48 off 40 balls earlier anchored it to 123-7.
Despite the defeat, West Indies topped Group 1 on a superior net run-rate than England as both teams finished on six points. It was Afghanistan first victory. West Indies will take on the winner of the India vs Australia match later, in the second semifinal in Mumbai next Thursday.
