A charitable 'Ride for Hope'

The "Ride for Hope", a charity activity held under the joint effort of 11 Shangri-La properties in China, reached its final destination of Shanghai today. The cycling expedition was launched on November 16, 2013, from Shenzhen and took approximately 21 days to reach its climax.

Sponsored by Shangri-La hotels, cyclists set off on the "Ride for Hope" from Futian Shangri-La in Shenzhen, south China's Guangdong Province, with the aim of raising 120,000 yuan (US$19,728) to build 20 water cellars for around 20 families in a small village of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region.

Having passed through 22 cities before reaching Shanghai, the "Ride" received an enthusiastic response with people from all walks of life joining the cyclists during each leg in the 22 cities. The entry fee to join the ride was 200 yuan for adults, which included a rider's shirt, and 100 yuan for children. The official rider's shirt was on sale for charity at 500 yuan per piece.

The original team, including Nicholas Smith, resident manager of Shangri-La Futian, had added two more riders by the time it arrived at G312 Huayuan Road as the first stop in Shanghai at 12:30pm today. The riders then took the Cao'an Highway, East Longhua Road, Lujiabang Road Ferry Pier, passed South Pudong Road and Jinxiu Road, before arriving at Kerry Hotel Pudong at 4:30pm , the final destination of their 2,000-kilometer cycling expedition.

The villagers in Guangxi have just moved from the mountains to live along a newly built road. They used to collect precious rain water from stone caves. But having now lost their only access to water, they are in urgent need of water cellars that will be used to reserve water collected during the rainy season. This collected water needs to last one year, and each cellar costs 6,000 yuan.

The whole charity campaign has so far raised more than 400,000 yuan, according to Angel Mao, Shangri-La's director of public relations, South China. "The activity was well received and supported by both individuals and companies and organizations. The exact amount that we raise will be revealed soon," she added.

A sum of 120,000 yuan was donated to the Guangxi village at a press conference at the Shangri-La Hotel Shanghai this afternoon.

Besides, ten children's chairs worth 15,000 yuan were donated to the Will Foundation, a charity organization, at the press conference.

Shanghai Daily, the largest English-language news portal in East China, as the joint sponsor of the "Ride for Hope", raised 3,600 yuan by selling the iDEALShanghai/Shangri-La Charity Package on the official website.

The package priced at 1,200 yuan was worth 2,126 yuan, and included Shangri-La Hotel vouchers, Shanghai Daily's special T-shirts and gifts at iDEAL charity shop.
