Boonen captures Tour of Qatar title
TOM Boonen of Belgium won his third Tour of Qatar title on Friday after protecting his overall lead in the sixth and final stage, which was won by England's Mark Cavendish.
Boonen's victory came a day after the race was rocked by the death of his countryman Frederiek Nolf, who was found dead in his Doha hotel room hours before the start of the fifth stage. "My main focus was the yellow jersey and I dedicate this to Frederiek," said the Quick Step rider, who also won here in 2006 and 2008. "It has been a sad time for all of us. We were just happy racing today after what happened." Cavendish, the 23-year-old Team Columbia rider, won the 121-kilometer sprint stage in 2 hours, 36 minutes, 18 seconds.
