Cavendish persona non grata at Dutch race
BRITAIN'S Mark Cavendish is no longer welcome at the Boxmeer Criterium in the Netherlands, Dutch news agency ANP said yesterday, reporting that race organizers had withdrawn his name from the list of starters.
The decision follows a controversial incident in stage 10 of the Tour de France on Tuesday in which Dutchman Tom Veelers fell in the finishing straight.
Omega-Pharma's Cavendish was accused of knocking Argos rider Veelers off balance during the sprint for the line, although he was given the benefit of the doubt by race commissaires.
The one-day Boxmeer race takes place on July 22, the day after the final stage of the Tour.
Some spectators vented their anger against Cavendish during Wednesday's time-trial, with one spraying him with urine.
