Chavanel abandons Tour with sickness
FRENCH time trial champion Sylvain Chavanel abandoned the Tour de France early yesterday on the 15th stage from Samatan to Pau on Monday, race organizers said.
Chavanel, of the Omega-Pharma team, has been sick with a chest infection in recent days and had been taking antibiotics.
His team sports director Brian Holm said: "He's lost his voice and he'd been finding it hard to breathe.
"This morning he was really sick. He spoke with the doctors of the team and they've advised him it would be best to pull out of the Tour."
Chavanel started the 158.5-kilometer ride from Samatan to Pau but the frantic pace prompted by several early attacks soon left him trailing.
The Frenchman is now expected to recover as quickly as possible for the Olympic road race which takes place six days after the end of the Tour, on July 28.
Meanwhile, Norwegian Thor Hushovd, the 2010 world champion, yesterday announced that he was pulling out of the Olympic Games due to ill health.
"My priority is that Norway has the best possible road cycling team in London but unfortunately I can't compete as my body is not functioning at its highest level," he said.
His manager, Atle Kvaasvoll, said: "There is something in his body that is making it not react like it should. I don't know whether it's a virus or something else but we are trying to find the cause."
Last month the health problem forced Hushovd out of the Tour de France. Hushovd's place in the Norwegian team will be taken up by Vegard Stake Laengen.
On Sunday, Bradley Wiggins avoided the chaos and negotiated another trouble-free stage of the Tour de France while his Sky team protected his yellow jersey.
