Demare takes Tour stage amid crashes

ARNAUD Demare gave the host country a long-awaited sprint win on stage four of the Tour de France yesterday after Mark Cavendish was forced into the barriers, resulting in a nasty crash.
Overhead video appeared to show world champion Peter Sagan bumping into Cavendish, who was squeezed against the barriers to his right. Cavendish slammed into the barriers and two other riders plowed over the British sprint specialist, a winner of 30 Tour stages.
A medical team quickly ran out to treat the Dimension Data team rider, jogging into the oncoming stream of riders to reach him.
Slovakia’s Sagan crossed second and Norway’s Alexander Kristoff (Katusha) finished third in the stage, a 207.5-kilometer ride from Mondorf-les-Bains in Luxembourg to Vittel, France.
There was another crash earlier that delayed Tour leader Geraint Thomas, but the Welshman retained the yellow jersey since it happened in the neutral zone near the stage finish.
Team Sky’s Thomas leads Bora rider Sagan, who could face face disqualification from the race over the incident, by seven seconds, with defending champion Chris Froome third.
FDJ rider Demare, who has been in impressive form lately, had time to raise his arms in celebration before crossing the line. He took the green jersey for the points classification in the process.
Today’s fifth stage should see the top guns in action as the 160.5-km ride from Vittel will end up La Planche des Belles Filles, a lung-busting 5.9-km climb at an average gradient of 8.5 percent.
