Guo claims keirin crown
GUO Shuang of China won the women's keirin with a final surge yesterday, the last day of the world track championships in Pruszkow, Poland.
Guo, the keirin bronze medalist at the Beijing Olympics, raced past Clara Sanchez of France and Willy Kanis of the Netherlands on the final stretch to capture her first world keirin title.
She had won silver at the 2007 world championships.
Sanchez, the 2006 silver medalist, finished second, while Kanis picked up a bronze to go along with the silver she won on Saturday in the individual sprint.
Giorgia Bronzini of Italy won the women's points race, ahead of Yumari Gonzalez Valdivieso of Cuba.
Britain's Elizabeth Armitstead settled for bronze.
Australia added a gold to its haul when Leigh Howard won the men's omnium.
Zachary Bell of Canada picked up the silver medal, while Tim Veldt of the Netherlands took bronze.
The omnium includes five events held over a single day - two time trials, a scratch race, individual pursuit and a points race.
In the final event of the tournament, Gregory Bauge of France won the men's individual sprint.
Bauge beat Azizulhasni Awang of Malaysia in the final's decider to win his first sprint gold medal.
Bauge's compatriot Kevin Sireau beat Shane Perkins of Australia to win the bronze.
In the semifinals, Bauge easily outpaced countryman Kevin Sireau in their first race. In their second heat, the two riders bumped coming out of the final turn, causing Sireau to crash while Bauge managed to stay on his bike and cross the line.
Awang easily defeated Perkins in his semifinal.
On Saturday, Britain's Victoria Pendleton won her third successive individual sprint title.
The Olympic champion lunged for the line ahead of Dutchwoman Willy Kanis in the deciding third heat and then broke down in tears.
Simona Krupeckaite of Lithuania, gold medalist in the 500-meter time trial, took bronze.
