Italian Pellizotti banned for two years
ITALIAN rider Franco Pellizotti has been found guilty of doping by the Court of Arbitration for Sport and will serve a two-year ban.
"The CAS has partially admitted the appeal of the UCI and has imposed a two-year ban... as well as the disqualification of all his results obtained as from 7 May 2009," CAS said.
The UCI provisionally suspended Pellizotti, the 2009 Tour de France best climber, before the Giro d'Italia in May last year after they ruled the then Liquigas rider's blood values were 'abnormal'.
"The CAS Panel has noted the violation by Franco Pellizotti of the anti-doping rules prohibiting the enhancement of oxygen transfer and has imposed on him two-year ban starting on 3 May 2010, date corresponding to his temporary internal suspension," the CAS statement said on Tuesday.
Pellizotti must also pay a fine of 115,000 euros (US$159,800) to the UCI, CAS said.
The 33-year-old Pellizotti, who finished third overall in the 2009 Giro d'Italia, was cleared by the Italian Olympic Committee in October, prompting the UCI to appeal to CAS.
"It shows the remarkable work of UCI and cycling, with the biological passport, is paying off," UCI press officer Enrico Carpani said.
A biological passport is an electronic record where the results of all doping tests by a rider over a period of time are collated and compared.
WADA director general David Howman said the verdicts were a "significant step" in anti-doping efforts.
