Kittel wins 10th stage, Froome retains yellow

MARCEL Kittel won his second stage of the 2013 Tour de France yesterday, beating fellow German Andre Greipel in a sprint to the finish line.
Briton Mark Cavendish came in third after bumping shoulders with Kittel's Argos-Shimano teammate Tom Veelers of the Netherlands, sending him crashing to the ground about 150 meters before the finish line.
Britain's Chris Froome held on to the yellow jersey at the 100th edition of the endurance race, one minute 25 seconds ahead of Spaniard Alejandro Valverde of the Movistar Team.
Froome said his Team Sky had done well in defending his position.
"As long as we are aware that this isn't going to be an easy ride now, every day that we are in yellow it's an honor to be in this position," Froome told ITV television.
Froome, who was the Tour runner-up to countryman Bradley Wiggins last year, also has a healthy lead over two-time champion Alberto Contador of Spain, riding for Team Saxo-Tinkoff, and will look to extend it in today's time trial - a 33 kilometer run between Avranches and Mont-Saint-Michel.
Yesterday's 197-kilometer flat trek started from Saint-Gildas-Des-Bois in northwestern France and finished in the walled port city of Saint-Malo, a popular tourist destination on the northern coast of Brittany.
Four riders, including Tour debutante and local rider Julien Simon, led for 191 kilometers before being caught by the peloton as the race entered Saint-Malo after winding along wind-blown coastal roads.
Cavendish praised Kittel, who also won the crash-marred opening stage, and said his own Omega Pharma-Quickstep team had not had a great day.
"I think we as a team could have done something differently today. We will be talking about that later," the Manxman said.
But the Lotto rider could face sanctions from race officials after the Veelers incident and the Dutchman was lucky to escape with no serious injuries.
Slovakia's Peter Sagan of the Cannondale team was fourth ahead of Frenchman William Bonnet of FDJ.
