Krupeckaite sets time trial mark

LITHUANIA'S Simona Krupeckaite won the women's 500-meter time trial in world record time at the track cycling world championships in Pruszkow, Poland, on the opening day on Wednesday.

Also, France edged Britain again to retain the men's sprint title, New Zealand's Alison Shanks upset Briton Wendy Houvenaghel in the women's individual pursuit final, and Cameron Meyer of Australia won the men's points race.

Krupeckaite's time of 33.296 seconds broke the previous record of 33.588 set by Anna Meares of Australia in March 2007.

"I'm riding better and better in the World Cup this year, and we were working a lot for this record and I expected that here I could do it," said Krupeckaite, who finished second in the event at last year's worlds in Manchester, England.

Meares took silver in 33.796, while Britain's Victoria Pendleton claimed the bronze in 34.102.

In the individual pursuit, Shanks captured her first pursuit world title. Houvenaghel, the silver medalist in Beijing, had beaten Shanks by almost two seconds in their qualifying heat hours earlier, but couldn't keep pace with the Kiwi in the final.

In the bronze medal race, Vilija Sereikaite of Lithuania beat Joanna Rowsell of Britain.

Frenchmen Gregory Bauge, Mickael Bourgain and Kevin Sireau beat the British trio of Matthew Crampton, Jason Kenny and Jamie Staff in a time of 43.510 seconds to hold onto their world title.

France beat Britain at last year's worlds only to fall in the Olympic final.

Germany beat Australia to claim the bronze.

In the points race, Meyer won three of the last five sprints to edge Dene Daniel Kreutzfeldt and Beijing bronze medalist Christ Newton to claim the gold. Meyer ende with 24 points, Kreutzfeldt 22 and Newton 21.

"It was right down to the last sprint and it was a very tight race, but I kept at it and never gave up hope of being world champion and to come out with the result is just a dream come true," he said.
