Landis Riding Without A Team In Oregon

WHILE the Tour de France goes on a half-world away, disgraced former winner Floyd Landis is riding without a team in the Cascade Cycling Classic in central Oregon in the US.

In Tuesday night's prologue time trials for the six-stage race, Landis wore a simple gray T-shirt because race officials would not allow him to wear a logo-emblazoned jersey. He finished 91st out of 172 entrants.

Landis was stripped of his 2006 Tour de France title for doping and ultimately admitted this spring that he had used performance-enhancing drugs.

He is the central figure in a federal investigation of possible fraud and doping charges against seven-time Tour winner Lance Armstrong and his associates. Armstrong has vehemently denied doping and has never tested positive.

Landis, 34, is riding for the second straight year in the Cascade Classic. He is also racing solo after breaking ties with the Bahati Racing team.

Meanwhile, Armstrong has hired a criminal defense attorney to represent him in the federal investigation into possible fraud and doping violations. Bryan D Daly is a former US federal prosecutor based in Los Angeles.
