DENIS Menchov won the fifth stage of the Giro d'Italia in a grueling uphill finish on Wednesday, and Danilo Di Luca placed second to take the overall leader's pink jersey. Lance Armstrong lost nearly three minutes against the leaders.

Menchov, a Russian rider for the Rabobank team, covered the 125-kilometer leg that began in San Martino di Castrozza in 3 hours, 15 minutes, 24 seconds.
