Petacchi agrees to cooperate in doping probe
ITALIAN rider Alessandro Petacchi, the leading sprinter on the Tour de France, will cooperate fully with a doping investigation after the race finishes this weekend, his lawyer said yesterday.
Italian media said the 36-year-old Lampre rider had been given a legal warning saying he was being investigated over possible doping offences.
In a statement, the Lampre team said Petacchi had already confirmed through his lawyer Virginio Angelini that he would cooperate with the investigation in Padova.
"Alessandro Petacchi has already given, by his lawyer, his total availability with the full aim of clarifying his situation and he's sure he'll be able to prove his complete non-involvement in the event," the statement said.
News broke in April that Petacchi's house had been searched and that his Lampre team was at the center of a wide-ranging doping investigation but no charges were brought. Lampre denied any wrongdoing.
A spokesman for Italy's Olympic Committee said he was not aware of the development. He said a statement would be issued if there were any reason for the sporting authorities to become involved.
Petacchi was banned for a year after testing positive for the banned stimulant salbutamol in 2007.
He argued he had accidently taken too much of the substance in an asthma inhaler but the Court of Arbitration for Sport still imposed the suspension.
