Schleck to miss Games, Dutch woe

THE RadioShack cycling team said that Andy Schleck of Luxembourg is recovering from a spinal injury slower than expected and is likely to miss the London Olympics.

The 2010 Tour de France champion crashed last month during the Criterium du Dauphine and is still unable to ride his bike. RadioShack team doctor Andreas Goesele said yesterday that Schleck underwent an MRI scan that showed "the fracture is not fully healed yet."

Meanwhile, Dutch team Vacansoeil took a big hit at the ongoing Tour de France yesterday after two of its riders, Liuwe Westra and Rob Ruijgh, pulled out of the race.

The Dutchmen pulled out shortly after beginning the 25.3km ascension of the Madeleine, one of several big climbs on the 148-km 11th stage in the Alps from Albertville to La Toussuire.

It has been dubbed the 'Queen' mountain stage because of its difficulty.

Another Dutch team, Rabobank, saw its Australian sprint specialist Mark Renshaw pull out before the day's second climb.
