Swiss Cancellara wins home tour

FABIAN Cancellara won the Tour of Switzerland after a convincing victory in the ninth and final stage on Sunday.

Cancellara, a time-trial specialist who won Olympic gold in Beijing last year, beat German Tony Martin in a 39-kilometer time trial that started and ended in the capital Bern.

He became the first Swiss rider since Alex Zuelle in 2002 to secure an overall victory.

Martin finished 1 minute, 27 seconds behind, with Thomas Dekker of the Netherlands coming third.

Cancellara finished 2 minutes, 2 seconds ahead of Martin in the overall standings.

Defending champion Roman Kreuziger of the Czech Republic came third overall, 2 minutes, 24 seconds behind.

It was Cancellara's first major stage race win since the Tirreno-Adriatico on 2008.

"This is a fantastic day for me," said Cancellara.

"I never expected to win this race but it is truly a great feeling and an encouraging result for the Tour de France."

In Nevada City, California, Lance Armstrong won the Nevada City Classic on Sunday, holding off Levi Leipheimer in the challenging one-day race.

Armstrong finished a repeated 1.8-km circuit through the historic mining town in 1 hour, 28 minutes and 20 seconds.

Ben Jacques-Maynes finished 21 seconds behind in second place. Leipheimer, the three-time Tour of California champion, was third, 1 second behind Jacques-Maynes.
