Wiggins lashes out at doping talks
YELLOW jersey holder Bradley Wiggins hit out angrily at cynics who believe his and Team Sky's impressive riding on the Tour de France could be down to doping.
The Briton, a three-time Olympic track champion, defended the race lead on the second day in the hills after coming under attack for the first time in Sunday's eighth stage.
Before the first of two big time trials yesterday, a 41.5-kilometer race against the clock in Besancon, Wiggins is 10 seconds ahead of defending champion Cadel Evans with Italian Vincenzo Nibali at 16.
Sky's formidable performance on Stage 7 on Saturday, when teammate Chris Froome won the stage and Wiggins took the race lead, led to some speculation that the team's efforts were not down to hard work alone.
But after the race Wiggins had a strong message for the team's detractors.
"Honestly they're just fucking wankers. I can't be doing with people like that," said Wiggins. It justifies their own bone idleness... because they can't ever imagine applying themselves to anything in their lives.
"And it's easy for them to sit under a pseudonym on Twitter and write that kind of shit rather than get off their arses and apply themselves and work hard at something and achieve something."
Meanwhile, Fabian Cancellara took the interim lead in the time trial yesterday.
The Swiss speedster, who wore the yellow jersey for seven days after winning the race prologue, clocked 52 minutes and 21 seconds.
Earlier, world champion Tony Martin blew a tire but still posted the best provisional time of 53:40.
The German could not hold on to the lead after a nearly flawless ride by Cancellara.
Riders were competing in the time trial in the reverse order of the general classification. Wiggins will be the last of the 178 riders.
