British teenager Daley strikes gold in platform

BRITISH teenager Thomas Daley won the men's platform final at the USA Diving Grand Prix in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, on Saturday.

The 14-year-old scored perfect 10s from the seven judges on his fifth dive - a backward 3 1/2 tuck with a 3.3 degree of difficulty.

In his last three dives, Daley had all 10s except for five 9.5s - three 9.5s on his fourth dive and two on his sixth dive - for 554.90 points.

"It was my personal best score by 14 points, so I'm really happy," Daley said. "It was good that all my dives were near-perfect."

Sascha Klein of Germany took silver with 552.15 points and Zhou Luxin of China, who won silver in the platform at the Beijing Olympics, was third with 549.70 points.

American Troy Dumais, a three-time Olympian, picked up his second gold of the meet with 512.00 points in the three-meter springboard.

He scored more than 80 points on his last five dives, earning a 96.25 and 94.50 on his final two dives, respectively.

"I'm happy because I ahad five solid dives," said Dumais, who also won the synchronized three-meter springboard event with Kristian Ipsen on Friday. "The last two dives today, I love them and that's why I leave them for last."

Reuben Ross of Canada won silver with 483.75 and American Christopher Colwill (473.45) took bronze.

Allison Brennan of the US won the women's three-meter springboard with 358.55 points.

Wu Minxia of China, the bronze medalist in the three-meter springboard and gold medalist in synchronized springboard with Guo Jingjing at Beijing, finished a surprising fourth with 329.50 points.

Anastasia Pozdniakova of Russia (340.55) came in second with Canada's Jennifer Abel (331.95) third.
