Campbell the favorite heading into 100m free final

Australian sprinter Cate Campbell showed off her starting speed yesterday in morning heats of the 100m freestyle at the World Swimming Championships in Barcelona.

Campbell finished in 53.24 seconds while American Missy Franklin qualified second in 53.36 as she attempts to win her fourth gold in four events thus far. Sarah Sjostrom of Sweden was third.

In the women’s 4x200m freestyle relay, China set the fastest qualifying time at 7:52.50. Australia was 0.19 second behind while the US team qualified third.

In other prelims, Tyler Clary led the men’s 200m backstroke in 1:56.76 with Xu Jiayu of China also reaching the semifinals. 

American Micah Lawrence topped the women’s 200m breaststroke in 2:21.74. China’s Shi Jinglin qualified 7th.
