China reigns at US grand prix
HUO Liang won the men's 10-meter platform event at the USA Diving Grand Prix on Sunday, part of a strong weekend for China in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
Chinese divers won three of the four events on the final day of the only yearly international meet held in the United States. Huo teamed with Qiu Bo to win the synchronized platform competition with 456.27 points, and He Zi finished first in the women's 3-meter springboard.
Americans Christina Loukas and Abby Johnston won the synchronized 3-meter springboard title with 293.40 points.
Huo finished with 540.15 to win the individual platform gold. China also took silver, with Qiu at 524.55.
"When I was practicing I wasn't diving that good," Huo said. "I paid more attention to my dives in the competition."
The dive of the day belonged to Qiu, who scored six 10s on his second dive - a back arm stand triple somersault pike - for a score of 105.00. "I could tell it was going to be a good dive from the start," Qiu said through an interpreter.
He lost his shot at gold when he flubbed his third dive - a reverse 3 1/2 somersault tuck - and only scored 52.80.
Third place went to Oleksandr Bondar of the Ukraine, who turned in a 515.10.
China also got two wins on Saturday when Qin Kai captured the men's springboard event and teamed with Luo Yutong to top the synchronized springboard final.
He continued her strong run in the 3-meter springboard, totaling 389.45 to win the title. She has won five straight springboard golds at World Series events this year.
He was more than 50 points ahead of Anastasia Pozdniakova of Russia, who finished with a 337.35. Kelci Bryant of the United States had 333.60 points to take the bronze.
"The year to now, every competition has been a good experience," He said. She appears well on her way to achieving her goal of diving in the 2012 London Games: "It is my dream to participate in the Olympic Games."
