Gold medal diver Wang: At times it seemed a long way away
CHINESE diver Wang Hao explained that she had been forced to make a huge effort before being able to climb onto the podium in the London Olympic Aquatic Arena on Tuesday to receive a gold medal.
Wang and her partner Chen Roulin won China's third gold medal in diving in the three events held so far in London, finishing well ahead of Mexican paring of Paula Espinosa and Alejandra Orozco and the Canadians Meghan Benafeito and Roseline Filion.
Wang and Chen have been dominant in the event for the past two years, but Wang explained that it had not come easy for her.
"I have waited a long time for this," she admitted. "The past four years saw me suffer a series of knee injuries and also an eye problem and it was difficult for me to get back to my top fitness," she said.
Wang, nicknamed the "Green Tea Princess", added that she had needed to be very strict in order not to grow too heavy.
"After 2009, I had to control my weight and I had to be strict with myself. I was on a diet and at moments like that, you look ahead and it seems as if the Games are a long way away. At the time it seemed like a real struggle, but looking back now, I am glad I didn't give up and kept on working," she said, adding it was an honor to dive with Chen.
Chen had begun her press conference by thanking Wang for being her partner, as well as showing her gratitude to her family and coaches.
"I am very honored that I can add another gold medal for the Chinese delegation, this is my third Olympic medal," she commented.
Chen won gold in the same event in Beijing as well as taking gold in the individual 10 meter platform and said that experience had helped her quest for a medal with Wang.
"4 years ago I was younger, so I was nervous in this kind of contest, now 4 years later, I am more relaxed and mature as an athlete," she said.
Paula Espinosa's silver medal came on her 26th birthday and she thanked her 15 year-old partner for her contribution
"Today isn't like a normal day. It is a special day. Alejandra gave me a present this morning but winning an Olympic medal is the best birthday present that anyone could have given me. Alejandra has given me the best birthday present ever," she beamed.
"I didn't have a partner until last year, but this is very positive. Alejandra is young, but she has big dreams and in that she is older than her years and also works hard and has a great attitude," said Paula, who added that she wanted to help to promote her sport.
"I am in a position to open doors for women in this sport, so now I want to help other women have opportunities as I have," she said.
