Cyclist Li faces 2-year ban
CHINESE officials have not yet been informed of Lance Armstrong's RadioShack teammate Li Fuyu failing a dope test but have promised he will be punished according to the regulations if it is confirmed.
The 31-year-old rider was provisionally suspended by the International Cycling Union on Thursday after Clenbuterol was found in his sample after an in-competition test during the Dwars Door Vlaanderen in March.
Li, who still has the right to request the testing of his 'B' sample, faces a two-year ban from the Chinese Cycling Association if he is found guilty of using the banned substance.
"We have not got the formal notification from the UCI. If the violation is confirmed, we will hand out a punishment according to relevant regulations," a CCA official said yesterday.
Li, China's first professional cyclist, joined RadioShack in the close season. He also rode for Johan Bruyneel, the American team's manager, while with Discovery Channel in 2007. RadioShack issued a statement on Thursday saying Li would be removed from the team if the positive test was confirmed.
"Team RadioShack and its management take this incident very seriously. We will respect the rights of our rider but will enforce our zero tolerance policy should his B sample test positive."
Clenbuterol is often used to treat breathing disorders and rising blood pressure.
