Survey shows quarter of athletes could be doping
A national survey of more than 2,500 people has found that most Australians feel a quarter of elite athletes use performance-enhancing drugs, with athletics the biggest offender.
The Griffith University survey released today also said that respondents felt over a third of athletes used recreational drugs, study co-author Associate Professor James Skinner said.
Those respondents believed recreational drugs were commonly used in the Australian Football League, which plays Australian Rules football, and rugby league.
Skinner said 20 percent of those who responded believe athletics is the sport in which performance-enhancing drugs were most commonly used, followed by weightlifting (19 percent) and cycling (18 percent).
