Ye makes a big splash
Double Olympic Champion Ye Shiwen claimed gold in the 200-meter individual medley at the East Asian Games in Tianjin yesterday.
Ye won the race ahead of Hong Kong, China’s Siobhan Bernadette Haughey, and bronze medal winner Sakiko Shimizu of Japan.
Ye, 17, has had an indifferent year after she stunned the world at the 2012 London Olympics, taking gold in both the 200 and 400 individual medley events.
Her teammate and 200 Olympic champion Jiao Liuyang claimed bronze in the 50 butterfly. Jiao’s compatriot Lu Ying won gold, while Japan’s Yuka Kato took silver.
In the overall medals table the hosts had an impressive 83 golds, nearly four times the 23 won by South Korea. Japan was third with 18.
