5 anniversary triumphs at the Masters
Five anniversary wins ahead of the 83rd Masters golf tournament.
1999: Olazabal again
Spain’s Jose Maria Olazabal won his first major title at the 1994 Masters by two strokes over Tom Lehman but struggled with a series of health issues after that, a foot injury leaving him unable to play in 1996. But 20 years ago, he led Greg Norman by one shot entering the last round. The Australian eagled the par-5 13th but Olazabal answered with a 20-foot birdie putt moments later and held on for his second green jacket.
1989: First Faldo jacket
England’s Nick Faldo won the first of his three Masters crowns 30 years ago. He began the final round five adrift of leader Ben Crenshaw. He fired a 7-under par 65 to reach a sudden-death playoff with Scott Hoch, who missed a two-foot putt for victory on the first playoff hole. Faldo rolled in a 25-foot birdie putt on the second playoff hole for the green jacket.
1979: Fuzzy wins debut
American Fuzzy Zoeller became the first player since 1935 to win his Masters debut. Horton Smith won the 1934 inaugural comp and Gene Sarazen in 1935 was the only other debutante champion. He won the first-ever sudden-death Masters playoffs, those prior having been over 18 or 36 holes. At the second playoff hole, the 11th, Zoeller sank a 10-foot birdie putt for the victory and his first major title.
1949: Slammin’ Sam wins
Sam Snead fired back-to-back 67s on the weekend to capture his first Masters title by three strokes and became the first Augusta National winner to be awarded a green jacket immediately after the triumph. Prior winners were given their attire after the tradition began with Snead.
1939: Guldahl at last
Ralph Guldahl won the 1937 and 1938 US Open titles but finished runner-up at both the 1937 and 1938 Masters. But in 1939, Guldahl won the Masters by one stroke over Snead, firing a 72-hole record 9-under par 279 — a mark that stood until Ben Hogan broke it by five shots in 1953.
