Amateur makes history

Hou Yu-sang did just enough to earn her first win against a pro field over the weekend as the Chinese Taipei amateur claimed the CTBC Ladies Open by two strokes at Linkou International Golf & Country Club in New Taipei City. Going into the final round with a one-stroke lead, the 20-year-old overcame strong winds, nerves and a triple-bogey to close with a final-round 74. She finished on 1-under 215, the only player in the field to break par at the 1.12-million yuan (US$159,000) tournament. Fellow islander Tsai Pei-ying was second as the veteran closed with a 3-over 75 and was awarded the 225,000-yuan winner’s purse owing to Hou’s amateur status. New Zealand’s Hanee Song shot a tournament-low 6-under 66 to finish equal third with Chinese Taipei’s Hsieh Yu-ling (74) and Thai Titiya Plucksataporn (76) at five strokes back. Pan Yanhong was the top Chinese mainland after a final-round 78, finishing eighth, seven off the pace.
