British Open play hit by strong winds

Park In-bee was hopeful of tough conditions to help her make up an eight-shot deficit at the Women’s British Open.

It turned out to be too tough. An hour before the leaders were to tee off yesterday, play was suspended because of wind so strong that balls were not stopping on the green. Of the nine players who finished their rounds, the best score was a 75. Park, going after a record fourth professional major in the same year, was 1 under through four holes.

Park’s South Korean compatriot Choi Na-yeon, the halfway leader on 10 under, had not started her round.

St Andrews is one of the most difficult links courses in Britain when the wind is strong. The second round at St Andrews for the British Open was suspended briefly in 2010, the day Rory McIlroy shot 80 one day after his record-tying 63.

In Akron, Ohio, world No. 1 Tiger Woods matched the low round of his career with a 9-under-par 61 on Friday to seize a seven-stroke lead after the second round of the World Golf Championships-Bridgestone Invitational.

Woods, preparing for this week’s last major tournament of the year at the PGA Championship at Oak Hill, fired an eagle and seven birdies to finish 36 holes on 13-under 127.

Woods matched the Firestone Country Club course record of 61 he posted in 2000, when he won by 11 strokes with a record-low 72-hole total of 21 under, and flirted with breaking the PGA record-low of 59 before settling for par on each of the final five holes.

“Disappointed? Absolutely not,” Woods, a four-time winner this year and a seven-time winner of events at Firestone,  said. “A 61 is pretty good. I’m not bummed.”

England’s Chris Wood and American Keegan Bradley shared second on 134 after each fired a 68.

Aside from two at Firestone, Woods fired his other 61s at the 1999 Byron Nelson Championship and the 2005 Buick Open. Australian Stuart Appleby was the most recent player to shoot a 59 in a PGA event, doing so at the 2010 Greenbrier Classic.

Americans Al Geiberger, Chip Beck, David Duval and Paul Goydos have also accomplished the feat.
