Casey upset by wildcard snub
PAUL Casey said it was difficult finishing his campaign at the Barclays tournament on Sunday after learning he had missed out on a European Ryder Cup wildcard pick.
World No. 9 Casey played alongside triple major winner Padraig Harrington, who earned one of three wildcards alongside Briton Luke Donald and Italy's Edoardo Molinari.
Casey said he worked out the outcome of captain Colin Montgomerie's picks after seeing an exchange between Harrington's wife and the Irishman's caddie.
"I saw Caroline Harrington gave Ronan (Flood) the thumbs up on the seventh hole and then it went fairly quiet ... so I figured that was it," he said after carding a 69 for 277, 7-under par. "Caroline's a great friend. She would have said something to me if I had been picked. So at that point I kind of knew that I hadn't."
Briton Casey said it was awkward playing the rest of the round under the circumstances.
"It was about two and a half hours," he said. "It was difficult.
"Simple fact is I'm not on the team and I think Europe have got an unbelievable team. I wish them the best for the match (in October).
"I'm not going to stand here and sort of plead a case for why I should be on the team. It's done and dusted. I tried my hardest and didn't make it."
Donald questioned the qualifying process after Casey and Justin Rose missed out on selection.
"I feel bad for the guys who didn't make it. I feel bad for Paul and Justin had a good chance too," said world No. 10 Donald.
"The team has to look harder at the qualification system and whether it's the correct way to do it or whether there's a better way. Golf is really becoming a world game and I understand they want to protect the European Tour but at the same time, the top guys are going to want to play against the best players in the world no matter what and shouldn't be penalized for that."
