Cejka leads Poulter by two strokes at Sawgrass
GERMANY'S Alex Cejka fired a five-under 67 to lead by two shots from Briton Ian Poulter after the second round of The Players Championship at Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida, on Friday.
World No. 1 Tiger Woods was seven shots off the lead after producing a three-under 69.
The 38-year-old Cejka posted 13 birdies in his two rounds and is halfway toward the tournament record of 26 set by Fuzzy Zoeller in 1994.
Cejka has yet to win on the PGA Tour but was in contention at The Players four years ago when he was one stroke off the lead with four holes to go before fading to finish 12th.
"It was a little bit trickier for me than in the first round. I didn't really hit the ball as well as Thursday when I was kind of flawless," he said.
"But I still made a couple of good ups and downs and when I had birdie chances I took them. I am pretty excited to be up there two days in a row."
Poulter's four-under 68, to follow his 67 from the first round, leaves him in a strong position for the weekend, two strokes clear of six players four shots off the lead.
Swede Henrik Stenson and US Masters champion Angel Cabrera (65) were among those sharing third place.
Woods, still far from his best after his eight-month layoff following a knee operation, was again inconsistent with three bogeys among his six birdies.
In Williamsburg, Virginia, Lorena Ochoa topped the leaderboard for the sixth straight round on the US LPGA Tour, shooting a six-under 65 to take a three-stroke lead in the Michelob Ultra Open on Friday.
She was the person least likely to say she was threatening another runaway victory.
"It's never good to think that way," the Mexican world No. 1 said after making a tournament-record 13-under total.
Three players, Kim In-kyung, Kim Song-hee and Cristie Kerr, all finished at 10-under.
Lindsey Wright, who started the day one shot back, labored to a 69 and is alone in fifth, five shots behind.
