Crane takes 2-shot lead in Malaysia
AMERICAN Ben Crane birdied three of his final four holes to grab a two-shot lead after the third round of the co-sanctioned Asia Pacific Classic yesterday.
Crane's round of 5-under 66 gave him a three-round total of 197, 16-under, at the PGA Tour and Asian Tour event ahead of Sweden's Carl Pettersson, who also fired a 66.
"I'm pretty excited with where my game is at," Crane said after his round at the US$6 million tournament at the Mines Resort and Golf Club in Kuala Lumpur.
"I've been working hard on getting my mind in the right place. I'm just trying to play freely and trying to play like when I was playing like a kid."
Crane, 34, is aiming for his fourth PGA Tour title and showed his patience in tricky conditions which included a thunderstorm that delayed the afternoon's play by 61 minutes.
Singapore's Mardan Mamat (65), England's Brian Davis (66) and Luke Donald (67) and the American duo of Ryan Moore (69) and Ricky Barnes (69) were tied third, trailing by four strokes.
Siddikur Rahman of Bangladesh produced a 65 to sit tied for eighth place.
The 26-year-old Siddikur grew up in a poor family in the Bangladeshi capital Dhaka and built his first club by sticking the head of a broken 7-iron on a metal rod. He became the first Bangladeshi to win on the Asian Tour with his victory at the Brunei Open in August.
In Incheon, South Korea, Kim Song-hee birdied four holes in a row on the front nine yesterday and finished with her second straight 4-under 68 for a one-stroke lead over defending champion and Korean compatriot Choi Na-yeon at the LPGA Hana Bank Championship.
Winless in 73 LPGA Tour starts, Kim finished second in the LPGA Championship in late June, then lost a playoff to Choi the following week in the Jamie Farr Classic.
Choi also shot a 68 yesterday while American Vicky Hurst was third at 6 under after a 70.
Juli Inkster, the 50-year-old Hall of Famer who bogeyed the final hole last week in Malaysia to finish a stroke behind winner Kang Ji-min, was three strokes back at 5 under after a 68.
