Creamer leads by 3 shots at US Open
PAULA Creamer sank a three-foot birdie putt at the 18th to complete a 1-under-par 70 yesterday that gave her a three-shot lead heading into the afternoon's final round of the US Women's Open in Oakmont, Pennsylvania.
The 23-year-old American, one of 33 players who made an early morning return to Oakmont Country Club to finish the round in the storm-hit championship, had a 1-under 212 total in her chase after a maiden major title.
American veteran Wendy Ward was alone in second on 2-over 215 after parring the last hole to complete her 70.
Tied for third on three over par were former LPGA Championship winner Suzann Pettersen of Norway (72), American Christina Kim and 20-year-old Amy Yang of South Korea (71). Fifteen-year-old American Alexis Thompson, playing her first major as a professional, was one more shot away on 217.
Creamer, who has eight LPGA Tour titles to her credit, had five holes to finish under sunny skies yesterday morning and ran into problems with her putter on 16 and 17.
She three-putted the par-three 16th for bogey and wasted an opportunity for birdie at the short par-4 17th by taking another three putts after driving the green.
Creamer, as ever wearing her trademark pink, bounced back at the last, striking a brilliant approach within a yard and rolling in the birdie putt to restore her three-stroke lead.
"It was a great finish on one of the best swings I've made this week," she said about her approach at 18.
Creamer said her bandaged left thumb, healing after surgery to repair a torn ligament, was holding up all right.
Players will be going off in threesomes from the first and 10th holes for the final round, with Creamer, Ward and Yang in the final grouping.
