Dou grabs early lead at Asia Pacific Amateur

Dou Zecheng opened with a 3-under 68 yesterday to take a two-shot lead at the Asia-Pacific Amateur Championship.

Dou started off well in cool, windy conditions in Longkou City, east China’s Shandong Province, and raised hopes that another Chinese teenager might be in the Masters next year. The winner of the Asia-Pacific Amateur earns an exemption to the Masters and to the final stage of qualifying for the British Open.

Guan Tianlang, the defending champion who went on to make the cut at Augusta National as a 14-year-old, struggled to a 74.

Dou, who made the cut at the China Open, had a two-shot lead over Lee Chang-woo of South Korea. Brady Watt, the Australian who reached the semifinals of the US Amateur, was another shot back after a 71.

In Yangmei, Chinese Taipei, defending champion Suzann Pettersen shot a 4-under 68 for a three-stroke lead after the first round of the Sunrise Championship yesterday as she tries to close the gap to Park In-bee atop the LPGA rankings.

Americans Alison Walshe and Irene Cho were tied for second with Karine Icher of France and Caroline Hedwall of Sweden.

Local favorite Tseng Ya-ni, the 2011 Sunrise champion, only managed a disappointing 76.

Even with a victory, Pettersen cannot overhaul Korean Park, who is not playing here, atop the rankings this week. But a good result for the Norwegian would set up a tight finish to the LPGA season, with two events still left.
