Feng extends lead in Dubai

CHINA’S world No. 5 Feng Shanshan, the highest ranked player in the field, lived up to her billing as the pre-tournament favorite as she opened up a four-shot lead on top of the leaderboard at the halfway stage of the Dubai Ladies Masters, the season-ending championship of the Ladies European Tour yesterday.
At the Majlis course of Emirates Golf Club, Feng added a bogey-free 5-under-par 67 to her first-round effort of 66 to reach 11-under 133 after two rounds.
England’s Charley Hull, the reigning Order of Merit leader, did her chances of becoming the new European No. 1 no harm when, despite a double bogey on her final hole, she finished on 2-under 70 to tally 7-under 137.
But Hull, 18, will have her task cut out over the next two days as France’s Gwladys Nocera, who trails her by 22,716 euros (US$28,155), moved to within one shot with a round of 3-under 69. Nocera was tied third at 6-under alongside Sweden’s world No. 12 Anna Nordqvist (69) and Finn Noora Tamminen (66).
Nocera is the only player who can overtake Hull and she will have to finish inside the top-four to have a mathematical chance of doing that.
In Chonburi, outside Bangkok, Marcus Fraser of Australia chipped in for birdie on the 18th hole for a 3-under 69 yesterday to join a group of four players sharing the lead after the first round of the Thailand Golf Championship.
Local player Thanyakorn Khrongpha, Richard Lee of Canada and Lu Wei-chih of Chinese Taipei were also tied atop the leaderboard at the Asian Tour event, one shot ahead of a trio that included 2011 champion Lee Westwood.
The 36-year-old Fraser missed most of the year with a wrist injury, and got a bit lucky on the 18th when his drive bounced across a cart path but landed in a good lie. Westwood had the best round among the star names at the event, with Sergio Garcia and Martin Kaymer both shooting a 71.
