Feng soars with eagle on 18th hole

China’s Feng Shanshan shot a 5-under-par 68 yesterday to claim a dramatic one-shot victory over American Stacy Lewis at the inaugural Reignwood LPGA Classic in Beijing.

Playing before a home crowd, Feng had led Lewis going into the final round. But the American took a single stroke lead into the clubhouse yesterday after shooting a 68, putting pressure on Feng with a hole still to play.

The 24-year-old Guangzhou native made up the deficit and more with an eagle on the par-5 18th hole to finish at 266, or 26 under, just ahead of Lewis’ 267.

Feng’s victory at the US$1.8 million tournament — the LPGA’s first in China — netted her US$270,000 and was her second on the LPGA Tour after winning the 2012 Wegmans LPGA Championship.

With last year’s win, Feng became the first Chinese golfer of either sex to cop a major golf championship, according to the LPGA.

World No. 1 player Park In-bee of South Korea, meanwhile, finished third at 271 after also carding a 5-under 68.

In Tamsui, Australia’s Scott Hend mastered hostile weather to win his fourth Asian Tour title at the Taiwan Masters yesterday.

As the Taiwan Golf and Country Club faced the wrath of Typhoon Fitow, 40-year-old Hend defied torrential rain and gusty winds to card a final-round 2-over-par 74 for a winning total of 3-under 285.

Hend, who had an overnight one-shot lead, relied on his experience of playing in challenging conditions in Scotland last week to finish four strokes ahead of American Sam Cyr who signed off with a round of 77.
