Guan shoots 69 to make cut as Glover takes lead
WHILE Chinese prodigy Guan Tianlang stunningly made his second consecutive cut on the US PGA Tour, American Lucas Glover surged into a one-shot lead in Friday's second round of the Zurich Classic of New Orleans.
Guan fired a 3-under-par 69 to make the cut a fortnight after his historic weekend at the Masters in Augusta.
Guan's second-round effort followed an even-par opening round and gave him a 3-under total of 141.
That was nine shots off Glover, but saw him make the cut right on the number in a tie for 57th.
"I think I played a very good round today," the 14-year-old amateur said after a round that included five birdies and two bogeys. "I made a lot of birdies and a couple of good up and downs. So I think I had a pretty good round, I think. I think I made the cut."
He said making the cut had been one of his goals.
Two weeks ago at Augusta National, Guan became the youngest player ever to compete in the Masters and the second-youngest in any of the major championships.
He shot a final-round 75 for a 12-over total of 300, earning Low Amateur honors.
His parents were among the large gallery that followed him on Friday at TPC Louisiana.
Guan, a school boy from south China's Guangdong Province, spent a month in the New Orleans area last year working on his game, a factor he believes contributed to the sizable number of fans who followed him.
"I'm not too surprised because I came here last year and I have some friends here," he said.
Former US Open champion Glover, meanwhile, maintained his red-hot form with the putter, firing a 5-under 67 after teeing off on a relatively calm morning.
Seeking his first PGA Tour victory in nearly two years, the 33-year-old rolled in an 18-foot birdie putt on his final hole, the par-5 18th, to post a 12-under total of 132.
Fellow American Boo Weekley, who holed out from 105 yards to eagle his opening hole, the par-4 10th, was alone in second after carding a 68 with compatriot DA Points a further stroke back, also after a 68.
Four-time major winner Ernie Els was four shots off the pace after shooting a 69. The South African lost a playoff to Jason Dufner last year in the event. American Dufner was 3 under after a 71.
Bubba Watson, the 2011 winner, rebounded from an opening 73 with a 65 to reach 6 under.
