Harrington, Felton toast wins

PADRAIG Harrington won the Iskandar Johor Open yesterday, securing his first victory in two years.

The three-time major champion had a 3-under 69 in the final round for an overall 20-under 268 at the US$1.25 million Asia Tour event.

"There's no doubt that it was my week to win," the Irishman said. "If you had followed me for the four days, I don't think anyone would have questioned that my name was written on the trophy before the tournament started ... I hit some good shots and had a few breaks."

Harrington, part of Europe's Ryder Cup winning team, went into the final round with a five-stroke lead. He ended three shots clear of Noh Seung-yul of South Korea at Horizon Hills Golf and Country Club in Malaysia's southern Johor state.

Harrington last won in 2008 at the PGA Championship. It was Harrington's third Asian Tour title after previous wins in Taipei and Hong Kong.

Harrington, 39, was making his debut in the event. He tightened his grip with three straight birdies from the second hole but had two bogeys over his closing three holes.

The 19-year-old Noh retained the Asian Tour Order of Merit after a 65. He moved to 5-under for the round through 11 holes but a bogey on 13 where he found water with a drive ended his fight.

Lin Wen-tang of Chinese Taipei, a five-time winner, finished four strokes back in third after a 68 which included a double bogey on the seventh hole.

"Padraig was in good form. There were no par fives for him as he played them like par fours," the 36-year-old Lin said.

Singapore's Mardan Mamat was fourth and Kiradech Aphibarnrat of Thailand and Australian Scott Barr shared fifth place.

In Shunde, southern Guangdong Province, Kim Felton became OneAsia's first Australian champion of the year with a two-shot victory at the US$1 million Midea China Classic.

A six-time winner in Australia and a former Nationwide Tour regular, Felton shot a stunning 6-under 65 for a 12-under total of 272, two ahead of Scotland's Simon Yates who carded a 67 at Royal Orchid International Golf Club.

Andre Stolz (69), a former PGA Tour winner, and fellow Australian Mitchell Brown (71) shared third at eight-under. Young South Korean Bang Doo-hwan (70), former PGA Tour regular Stephen Allan (72) and third-round leader Stephen Dartnall (74) tied for fifth at seven-under.

Defending champion Liang Wenchong of China battled to a 69 as the three-time OneAsia winner tied for eighth on five-under.
