Kang takes LPGA title in Malaysia

KANG Ji-min won the Sime Darby LPGA Malaysia for her second LPGA Tour title, beating Juli Inkster by a stroke yesterday when the 50-year-old Hall of Famer bogeyed the final hole.

Kang, the 30-year-old South Korean player, birdied the par-4 18th for a 6-under 65 and a 9-under total at Kuala Lumpur Golf and Country Club.

Inkster finished with her second straight 67. The American birdied Nos. 15-17 to take the lead, but couldn't hold on in her bid to break the LPGA Tour age record of 46 years, 8 months set by compatriot Beth Daniel at the 2003 Canadian Women's Open.

Sweden's Maria Hjorth (71) and Japan's Mika Miyazato (69) tied for third at 6 under, and South Korea's Meena Lee (69) was 5 under.

American Michelle Wie shot a 74 to tie for 34th at 3 over.

Kang, also the 2005 LPGA Corning Classic winner, birdied three of the last four holes. She earned US$270,000 in the inaugural event.

"Oh my God, I can't believe I won the tournament," Kang said. "I made a lot of putts ... I noticed I was playing pretty darn good toward the end."

The tour will remain in Asia the next two weeks for events in South Korea and Japan.

In Las Vegas, defending champion Martin Laird carded a bogey-free 8-under 63 at the TPC Summerlin to move into a one-shot lead after the third round of the Las Vegas Open on Saturday.

The Briton's round was highlighted by six birdies and an eagle on the 341-yard par-4 15th, where he drove the green to within six feet of the hole.

"I really left myself the easiest putt on the green; it was right-edge, up-the-hill putt," Laird told reporters. "That's the one most of us would want if we had six feet for eagle."

Second-round leader Jonathan Byrd had a round of 5-under 66 and is one stroke back after the American recorded six birdies and a bogey in his round on Saturday.

Australian Cameron Percy had the low score of the day, a career best nine-under 62 with five birdies through the first nine holes, for a 17-under 196.

He is joint-third with American Webb Simpson, who shot a 64.
