Kobayashi wins by a shot

JAPAN'S Masanori Kobayashi fired a 9-under-par 62 yesterday to win the Asia-Pacific Panasonic Open.

Kobayashi started the final round six strokes back of overnight leader Masamichi Uehira of Japan but recorded an eagle and five birdies on the front nine before completing the round with three more birdies against a lone bogey to capture his first win of the season. "I had hoped to win at least one tournament on the Japan tour and Asian Tour. I never thought I would do it at a joint event," he said.

The Asia-Pacific Panasonic Open is co-sanctioned by the Japan Golf Tour Organization and the Asian Tour.

The 36-year-old Kobayashi, whose only previous win on Japan's tour was at last year's Hamamatsu Open, finished at 17-under 267, one shot ahead of compatriot Komei Oda, who shot a 67. Uehira finished third three strokes off the pace after a 71 while India's Shiv Kapur, Tomohiro Kondo of Japan and Juvic Pagunsan of the Philippines tied for fourth place.
