Lane takes lead at Avantha Masters

BARRY Lane's second consecutive round of 67 yesterday allowed the veteran Englishman to move into the lead on the second day of the US$2.1 million Avantha Masters in Gurgaon, outside New Delhi, India.

Lane began the day tied for third - three shots behind overnight leader Marcel Siem of Germany - and three birdies in his opening nine holes helped the 49-year-old remain in touch with the leaders.

He picked up another shot at the first - though that was subsequently canceled out with a bogey at the fifth - before two more birdies moved Lane to 10 under and a stroke ahead of four players.

Andrew Dodt held the lead over Lane but a double bogey at the 16th caused the Australian to slip back into a tie for second on nine under.

Dodt reached the turn in 32 following four birdies over his opening nine holes and, although his progress was checked with a bogey at the 10th, three consecutive birdies starting at the 11th helped him to the top of the leaderboard.

However, a wayward tee shot on the par-three 16th found the water and he eventually took a five to card a 68.

He joins David Drysdale after the Scot produced a strong finish with three consecutive birdies in his five-under 67.

Siem also finished nine under and was joined by Chan Yin-shin of Chinese Taipei who picked up shots on the fourth and sixth.

Darren Clarke of Northern Ireland climbed into contention with one of the best rounds of the day, a six-under 66 that featured nine birdies, seven of which came in his last seven holes.

At Pebble Beach, California, title holder Dustin Johnson made the most of benign, sunny conditions to shoot an eight-under 64 and take a one-stroke lead after the first round of the Pebble Beach National Pro-Am on Thursday.

Johnson, who won last year's tournament by default after the fourth round was washed out by heavy rain, tore up Pebble Beach Golf Links' back nine with five consecutive birdies to lead fellow American JB Holmes and KJ Choi of South Korea.

"Ever since the first time I came here I've really liked this golf course," Johnson told reporters. "The way it sets up to my eye. This is a special place. It's so beautiful out here."

American Charley Hoffman, who played the par-70 Monterey Peninsula Country Club's Shore Course, is two shots back on six-under, while former world No. 1 David Duval is among a group of 12 three adrift.

Johnson was joined by Holmes and Choi on Pebble Beach's links course, usually considered the easiest of the three in rotation which also include the Spyglass Hill course.

The gentle conditions and officials' decision to allow players to lift, clean and place resulted in some aggressive hitting and low scores.

"Every time you get good weather out here, especially with the greens being this soft and being able to lift, clean and place it in the fairway you can shoot a good number here," Johnson said.
