Lee hangs on for 1-shot win

SOUTH Korea’s Lee Jung-min survived a rocky finish where she bogeyed two of the last three holes to win the World Ladies Championship in Dongguan, south China’s Guangdong Province, yesterday.
The big-hitting 24-year-old closed with a final-round 66 under wet conditions to finish at 9-under-par 279 on the Mission Hills Olazabal Course, one stroke ahead of compatriots Lee Seung-hyun (71), Kim Bo-kyung (69) and Ji Han-sol (71).
Fellow Korean Oh Ji-hyun (71) was fifth, two strokes back, while Liu Yu (72) was the top Chinese, tied with Thai Saraporn Chamchoi (70), a shot further back in equal sixth.
Lee also helped Korea win the team competition with partner Ko Jin-young. The pair posted an aggregate score of 12-under to finish 15 strokes ahead of the French duo of Gwladys Nocera and Celine Herbin.
The Chinese Taipei team of Lin Tzi-chi and Kuo Ai-chen were five strokes further behind in third.
The US$800,000 championship was co-sanctioned between the China LPGA Tour, the LPGA Tour of Korea (KLPGA) and the Ladies European Tour.
In Hua Hin, Scott Hend shot a final-round 68 to beat Piya Swangarunporn of Thailand by a stroke to win the Thailand Classic at the Black Mountain Golf Course yesterday.
The Australian rolled in five birdies against one bogey for an overall total of 18-under 270 to win his second European Tour event.
The win marked the 43-year-old’s second Asian Tour title in Thailand after the 2013 Chiang Mai Classic and the eighth on the Asian Tour.
“I’m very proud to win this title,” Hend said.
Piya, 32, enjoyed his best result on the Asian Tour after he shot a tournament-record 63 yesterday that included seven birdies and an eagle on the 10th to finish one back.
Thomas Pieters of Belgium was three strokes off the lead after a final-round 68 for a 15-under 273 total.
