Liang, Zhang seeking glory on home turf
LIANG Wenchong and Zhang Lianwei will spearhead China's charge against the world's best players at the Omega Mission Hills World Cup which tees off today in Dongguan, near Shenzhen, hoping to capitalize on each other strengths in pursuit of home success.
Zhang, a five-time Asian Tour winner will be representing China in the World Cup for the sixth time while Liang, Asia's No. 1 in 2007, will be making his fourth appearance and for the third consecutive year.
"This is an important week for us as we are playing at home and we do not want to let our home fans down. We've always said that it's an honor to represent our country and we'll do our best," said Liang.
Liang has enjoyed three top-10 finishes, including two runner-up spots, on the Asian Tour this season and he is hopeful that his good form will bring success to his country, too.
"I love to play golf. This is my job.Every time I go up there, I want to play golf, very good golf. And of course, there's pressure out there on the golf course, but I think I will turn the pressure into a very positive one for the next four rounds," said the 31-year-old.
The Chinese duo's best performance was a tied-11th finish in 2007 and Zhang has already identified a game-plan that will hopefully improve on their previous best finish.
"I prefer the fourball format as it will give us the chance to play to our strengths. There are some holes which either Liang or myself can attack and we'll use every opportunity to return with a low score," said Zhang.
China qualified for the World Cup as host and it will tee off the opening round's fourball alongside defending champion Sweden, represented by world No. 7 Henrik Stenson of Sweden and his partner, Robert Karlsson.
The first and third days are fourball, in which four balls are used and the player with the fewest shots takes the hole for their team. The second and final days involve foursomes play, where the teams compete using only one ball per pair.
