Liang retains one-stroke lead at China Challenge

CHINESE No. 1 Liang Wenchong maintained his one-shot lead after 13 holes of the Shui On Land China Golf Challenge, playing two holes at the Sun Kingdom Golf Club in Chongqing City yesterday, day five of the week-long, seven-city tournament.

World No. 2 Lee Westwood shares second place with fellow Englishman Ian Poulter at 1-under with US Open champion Rory McIlroy ending the day at 6-over, one shot better than he had started.

McIlroy was the only player to bag a birdie during the two holes, having struggled on the course during the first four days. The 22-year-old Northern Irishman birdied the 173-yard par-3 12th hole to move to 6-over, while the three other players parred both holes.

Westwood came closest to a birdie at the monster 678-yard par-5 13th hole, narrowly missing his first putt after a great pitch close to the flag on the event's longest hole.

"That was a long hole, wasn't it? I haven't played a hole that long for a while, plus it was wet," Westwood said.

From Chongqing, the players took an afternoon flight to Shenzhen in southern Guangdong Province and made their way to Dongguan.

Final two holes

Today, the quartet will play three holes at Long Island Golf and Country Club. They will then fly to Macau for the final two holes of the tournament.

In New Delhi, Chiragh Kumar of India raced into a three-shot lead after the second round of the Hero Indian Open.

He battled to a 5-under 67 to hold on to his overnight lead with a two-day total of 13-under 131 at his home course, the Delhi Golf Club.

Australia's David Gleeson, a two-time Asian Tour winner, eagled two holes for 66 to lie in second while Chapchai Nirat of Thailand, who holds the world 72-hole scoring record he set in India in 2009, was a further two shots back in third after his blemish-free round of 67.

Ross Bain of Scotland, Scott Barr of Australia and Young Nam of South Korea were tied in fourth place on 137 in the US$1.25 million Asian Tour event.

In Kuala Lumpur, Stacy Lewis fired a 6-under 65 to take the joint lead with fellow American Brittany Lang on the second day of the LPGA Malaysia yesterday.

Lewis dropped two shots at the par-4 ninth but made eight birdies for a total of 9-under 133. Lang maintained her momentum at the top after carding a 4-under 67.
