Liang tames Chengdu field for 3-stroke lead

LIANG Wenchong produced another flawless round of golf to maintain his lead at the halfway mark of the US$1 million Chengdu Open, the opening event of the season on OneAsia.

The Chinese No. 1 fired a six-under 66 at Luxehills International Country Club in Chengdu, Sichuan Province, for a three-stroke lead over Kurt Barnes and Kim Bio.

Australian Barnes matched Liang's opening-round course record with a 64 while Kim, of South Korea, shot a 66.

Liang leads the tournament on 14-under 130 after his second bogey-free round.

"My coach Kel Llewellyn and I have been working on the basics of the golf swing. He is here this week and we have been keeping things simple and it has obviously been working well. I am playing some of my best golf," said Liang, who is bidding to win for the second time on OneAsia after the Midea China Classic last year in Guangzhou.

Australians Terry Pilkadaris (67) and Scott Arnold (67) are four shots behind Liang.

In Humble, Texas, Kevin Stadler carded a five-under 67 to share the Houston Open first-round lead with Australian Cameron Percy on Thursday.

Americans Anthony Kim, Kevin Sutherland, James Driscoll and Vaughn Taylor trailed by a stroke while Phil Mickelson and Padraig Harrington were in a group on 69.

Last year's champion Paul Casey was unable to defend his title due to a left shoulder injury. Fiji's Vijay Singh withdrew after nine holes due to pain in his abdominal muscles.

Stadler, whose father Craig won 13 times on the PGA Tour, including the 1982 Masters, said he had hit a rough patch of form recently.

"I was fighting my swing the last week or two but I got around today," Stadler, 30, said.
